God our redeemer,
you have delivered us from the power of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of your Son:
grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life,
so by his continual presence in us he may raise us
to eternal joy;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord.

All      Amen

First Reading

Acts 10.44-48

44While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47‘Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?’ 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

This is the word of the Lord

All        Thanks be to God

Gospel Reading

Alleluia, alleluia. I am the first and the last, says the Lord, and the living one; I was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore.

All        Alleluia

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

All        Glory to you, O Lord.

John 15.9-17

Jesus said to his disciples: 9‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

12‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All        Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

God our Father,
whose Son Jesus Christ gives the water of eternal life:
may we thirst for you,
the spring of life and source of goodness,
through him who is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) for the year ended 31 December 2020 will take place on Thursday, 27th May, at 7.30 pm.  If you usually submit a report, we understand that, as your team has not been able to meet due to COVID 19, this may not be possible this year.  However, anyone wishing to present a written report should ensure that it is received by Jolene Court no later than Saturday, 15th May, in order to allow time for the paperwork to be printed and collated, ready for the meeting.  In addition to this, nomination forms for churchwardens, PCC and Deanery Synod membership will be available at the back of the church two weeks before the meeting.  If you wish to stand for any of these roles, please complete a form and either leave it in church or return it to Jolene at the earliest.

Christian Aid week runs from 10-16th May 2021. In previous years we have been able to undertake collections in church and our community has always been extremely generous. This year Christian Aid has introduced an excellent online method of donating, via the Burton Latimer Churches Christian Aid e-envelope that has been set up. This makes donating extremely straightforward and anonymous.  Click on the link below (or copy and paste into your browser). This will display the e-envelope and enable you to add and submit your donation.

Pounds for Pentecost is your opportunity to help St Mary’s Church recover financially, as we walk out of Covid.  We need to provide a safe and vibrant worship for this and future generations.  At the time of preparing this notice sheet, we have raised £1178 towards our £4000 shortfall.  If you would like to consider a gift to St Marys Church see link below to our ‘Give a Little’ page or use QR code. www.stmarysburtonlatimer.co.uk/givealittle

Prayer list: The names of those who are ill or in need of prayer will remain on the prayer list for three weeks.  However, we realise that some people may need to be on for longer and, if this is the case, please speak with Carol Sharman who will be happy to arrange this

Please note that, for the service on 16th May and for the foreseeable future, we shall be filming/recording the Sunday morning services that take place in church which will  mean a difference in the time that we are able to offer them online.  In order to edit and upload the services to YouTube we shall need extra time and, consequently, the release time will be 6pm.

Hymn

What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

ev’rything to Him in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

ev’rything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged,

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful,

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our ev’ry weakness –

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Are we weak and heavy-laden,

cumbered with a load of care?

Jesus only is our refuge,

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,

thou wilt find a solace there.
