Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 7th June 2020

Trinity Sunday

Dear Friends

Welcome to this weeks service and Trinity Sunday.  We ponder the mysteries of the Holy Community that with love at its centre, it exists as One God and three persons in the Father Son and Holy Spirit serving each other and the world created to express that love.  Sadly, as we know, the free-will shared and perfectly expressed in the Trinity towards the goal of love is not exercised in the same way by us and therefore on this Sunday we are reminded of our need to love one another as we are loved.

Its is also a big challenge to let go of the ones we love into the Holy Trinity’s care and this weekend we find ourselves saying goodbye to a much loved member of our family and team Yvonne Desroches and her husband Simon.  Yvonne has been such a blessing to us in so many ways and many of you will find her departure difficult to take.  Her loving nature and willingness to get alongside so many folk who have spent time with her has been inspiring and a wonderful example of Gods heart for each of us, when we take the time to sit in communion with Him.  It is equally painful not to be free to give Yvonne and Simon the loving send off they deserve due to the impact of Covid 19 but I am pleased to say that we have at least been able to have a collection for a leaving gift (thank you to those who donated).  Tom and I have filmed it being given to her and will share a virtual goodbye on the church website and or Facebook page this Saturday June 6th accessible from 9am.  I am also delighted to say that Yvonne will be doing the talk this Sunday and hope you will enjoy and be challenged by what she says. We pray Gods blessing on Yvonne, Simon and the family as they make the transition into ministry at Emmanuel Church in Northampton.  For each of us remaining, stay safe, be careful, be holy…

Prayers

On this Trinity Sunday we have come before you Lord to offer our praise and adoration. You are God the creator, giving us richly all things to enjoy. You are Christ the Saviour of the world, made flesh to set us free. You are the Spirit of truth and love, willing to dwell in us. You are holy and blessed. One God, eternal Trinity, be near to us the people formed in your image, and close to the world your love brings to life.

Amen

Lord God, whose Son, Jesus Christ, understood people’s fear and pain
before they spoke of them, we pray for those in hospital; surround the frightened with your tenderness; give strength to those in pain;
hold the weak in your arms of love, and give hope and patience
to those who are recovering; we ask this through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen

Heavenly Father, we bring before you the brokenness of our world, and pray for peace amongst the nations.  In these difficult times, lift us up and fill our hearts with love for you and your Son, our saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God,
you have given us your servants grace,
by the confession of a true faith,
to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity
and in the power of the divine majesty to worship the Unity:
keep us steadfast in this faith,
that we may evermore be defended from all adversities;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First Reading

2 Corinthians 13.11-13

11Brothers and sisters, put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss.  All the saints greet you.

13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Gospel

Alleluia, alleluia.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
one God, who was, and who is, and who is to come,
the Almighty.

Alleluia.

Matthew 28.16-20

16The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

Almighty and eternal God,
you have revealed yourself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
and live and reign in the perfect unity of love:
hold us firm in this faith,
that we may know you in all your ways
and evermore rejoice in your eternal glory,
who are three Persons yet one God,
now and for ever.

Amen

Hymn for Trinity Sunday

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see

only thou art holy; there is none beside thee
perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

Prayer after Communion

Post communion prayer available on your sheet

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
