Sunday 6th September 2020

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 6th September 2020

The Thirteenth Sunday After Trinity

Dear Friends

I did not expect to be here writing this pre-amble, Anne and I had planned to be in central France enjoying the first day of a three week holiday, however along with many others we felt it prudent to cancel and stay at home especially as we have our aged parents living with us.

After a two week break we can at least look forward to our church re-opening, good news for those who are happy to venture back into the church. At the moment we along with many other churches have a two tier system of worship running. Those who seek the “physical” church and those who have found the “virtual” online church more to their liking. I wonder how this will play out in the future! Will people get so used to worshipping at home with their families that church attendance will drop even further or will absence make the heart grow fonder and we see a resurgence in church going? Only time will tell. I did hear a comment made this week that in general it is only the older generation that want their church open. That may well be the case but we should remember that in many parishes it is this older generation that has kept their church alive, ready for when the younger generation themselves are able and willing to take on a greater role in the ministry and life of the church.  Us “oldies” are merely keeping the pews warm for them.  It is really important that we try to reach out to as many people as possible in whatever format we can.

However you worship this Sunday may God bless you and keep you and your loved ones safe.

Mike

Prayers

Dear Lord, we pray for all those in need of hope, strength and encouragement.  We ask you to minister to them, dry their tears and take away their fears.  Be their healer, comforter and provider.  You know who is struggling and you know each one by name.  Please have compassion and mercy, and may they feel your presence like never before.  In the name of Jesus we pray.

Amen

Heavenly Father we bring before you our world.  We thank you for the beauty that we see all around us in the rivers, springs, mountains and hills, for the four seasons in which we see the glory of your creation and for the stars, moon and sun.  We pray for peace among your very diverse nations and end to war and civil unrest.

Amen

Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Collect

Almighty God,
who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up

on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First Reading

Romans 13.8-14

8Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 10Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

11Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; 13let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Gospel

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 18.15-20

Jesus spoke to his disciples. 15‘If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax-collector. 18Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.’

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

God our creator,
you feed your children with the true manna,
the living bread from heaven:
let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage
until we come to that place
where hunger and thirst are no more;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hymn

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

fill me with life anew,

that as you love, so may I love,

and do what you would do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

until my heart is pure,

until my will is one with yours

to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

fulfil my hearts’s desire,

until this earthly part of me

glows with your heav’nly fire.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,

so shall I never die,

but live with you the perfect life

of your eternity.

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
