Sunday 2nd of August 2020

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 2nd August 2020

The Eighth Sunday after Trinity

Dear Friends,

At long last the time has come when all those who have been “shielding” for the past four months are now able to venture out from their enforced isolation.  Whilst on the surface this is good news for those affected, I am sure they will still feel very anxious and a little apprehensive about
re-adjusting to normality after a long period of absence.  This is one of the reasons we decided to ask everybody attending our Sunday church services to wear a face mask, it is our attempt to make others feel safe and comfortable joining us.  We all need to do everything we can to help and support those who understandably still feel vulnerable.  As a wise lady named Rachel Kelly recently wrote in a church article “The alternative to exposure is avoidance.  When we avoid what we fear we can feel temporary relief.  The problem is that we feel the anxiety more keenly the next time we confront what worries us. So venture out we must: but like snails, we are allowed to take our time.”

So welcome back all you who have been isolated for so long and take Rachel’s advice and travel at your own pace.

Stay safe and God’s blessings be upon you.

Mike

Prayers

Loving God, we look to You whenever we are in need, trusting in Your love and Your abundant goodness.  As You once fed the hungry crowds with five loaves and two small fish, we ask that You would again fill those who are empty this day.  Pour out Your Spirit on all who hunger and thirst.

We pray for those who are empty emotionally—who are lonely and long for companionship and love, who are caught in the grip of depression, or overwhelmed with grief.  We pray for those who are spiritually empty—who are troubled, but don’t know where to turn; who long for purpose and meaning, but don’t know where to look; who need You, but do not yet know You. God, we praise You for Your abundant gifts in our lives. Pour out Your Spirit on us. Fill us with Your compassion and love, so that we would willingly share some of our abundance with those who have need

We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ your Son, who came so that all of humanity might come to know the abundant life that comes from You.

Amen

Collect

Almighty Lord and everlasting God,
we beseech you to direct, sanctify and govern
both our hearts and bodies
in the ways of your laws
and the works of your commandments;
that through your most mighty protection, both here and ever,
we may be preserved in body and soul;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

 Amen

First Reading Genesis 32.22-31

22Jacob got up, took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. 24Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. 25When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. 26Then he said, ‘Let me go, for the day is breaking.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go, unless you bless me.’ 27So he said to him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said, ‘Jacob.’ 28Then the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.’ 29Then Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he said, ‘Why is it that you ask my name?’ And there he blessed him. 30So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, ‘For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.’ 31The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip.

Gospel  Matthew 14.13-21

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

Glory to you, O Lord.

13When Jesus heard that Herod had beheaded John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.’ 16Jesus said to them, ‘They need not go away; you give them something to eat.’ 17They replied, ‘We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.’ 18And he said, ‘Bring them here to me.’ 19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

Strengthen for service, Lord,
the hands that have taken holy things;
may the ears which have heard your word
be deaf to clamour and dispute;
may the tongues which have sung your praise
be free from deceit;
may the eyes which have seen the tokens of your love
shine with the light of hope;
and may the bodies which have been fed with your body
be refreshed with the fullness of your life;
glory to you for ever.

Hymn

1) Dear Lord and Father of mankind,

forgive our foolish ways!

Reclothe us in our rightful mind,

in purer lives your service find,

in deeper rev’rence praise,

in deeper rev’rence praise.

2) In simple trust like theirs who heard,

beside the Syrian sea,

the gracious calling of the Lord,

let us, like them, obey His word,

“rise up and follow me,

rise up and follow me.”

Yvonne is now being cared for at home but is requiring round the clock care. If you would like to offer some practical support, we are looking for people who would be willing to cook a meal for two on a rota basis. Lucy Lorentzen our Safeguarding Officer (details below) is coordinating this, if you feel you could help with a meal please get in touch with Lucy. We are hoping to start the rota from Monday 27th July. Thank you

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
