Collect

Almighty God,
who called your Church to bear witness
that you were in Christ reconciling the world to yourself:
help us to proclaim the good news of your love,
that all who hear it may be drawn to you;
through him who was lifted up on the cross,
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

All       Amen

Gospel Reading

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

All       Glory to you, O Lord.

Mark 7.1-8,14-15,21-23

1When the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus, 2they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. 3(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; 4and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.) 5So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?’ 6He said to them, ‘Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written,
“This people honours me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
7in vain do they worship me,
teaching human precepts as doctrines.”’

14Then he called the crowd again and said to them, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 15there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.’ 21For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, 22adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. 23All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

All       Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

God our creator,
you feed your children with the true manna,
the living bread from heaven:
let this holy food sustain us through our earthly pilgrimage
until we come to that place
where hunger and thirst are no more;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sunday, 5th SeptemberThere will be a service of Holy Communion at 10 am.  However, instead of the 8.30 am service, we shall be having a shortened Evensong at 2.30 pm for the Patronal Festival of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to mark the occasion of Revd Canon Roger Knight’s 80th birthday and his having spent over 50 years in the priesthood.  Light refreshments will be available after the service.  All are welcome.  Those hoping to attend on the afternoon of Sunday 5th Sept are asked to please add their names to the list on the table at the back of the church.

Open invitation to anyone who would like to sing in the choir at the above traditional Evensong service (5th September at 2.30pm in church).  For further information contact Andrew.

We should like to thank everyone who contributes to our stewardship scheme, whether by standing order to our bank, through the Parish Giving Scheme or by regular giving through the plate.  We are grateful for your gifts.  If you would like to support us via method, please contact Charmaine Augustus (telephone 07810522458) for further     information.

Prayer list: The names of those who are ill or in need of prayer will remain on the prayer list for three weeks.  However, we realise that some people may need to be on for longer and, if this is the case, please speak with Carol Sharman who will be happy to arrange this

Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust Sponsored Ride And Stride

This is a Sponsored Bike Ride And Walk In Which People All Over England Ride Or Walk between churches, enjoying the countryside and admiring the many beautiful churches they visit.  This year, the event will take place on Saturday, 11th September.  Cycle or walk to churches in the local area with half the money raised by an individual being returned to that person’s nominated church, the remainder going to a central fund to be allocated to churches that apply for help.  It would be fantastic if more people entered this year, especially as any money raised nominating our church entitles us to apply for grants from the Trust, and it is a wonderful way to support and visit many of Northamptonshire’s beautiful churches.  Sponsorship forms and further information available from Nicholas Loake on: 01536723593/nloake@mac.com.
