The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 26th July 2020

The Seventh Sunday after Trinity

Hello, Everyone.

It was lovely to be back in church last Sunday, although strange to be so spread out,
masked and not able to sing.  Andrew played the piano before the service and recorded
the hymn, which we listened to.  Of course, we are still unable to receive the elements,
but ate and drank what we brought with us.

The lovely weather has taken me into the garden on a daily basis.  Today I shall home in
on the Olive.  I bought a small tree several years ago.  I re-potted it in the  Spring and put
it into my courtyard. It is in front of a white wall which reflects the heat and it loves it !
The Olive is one of the plants named in Deuteronomy 8:8 as growing in the land promised by God to His chosen people :”

…a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of Olive trees and honey”. Doesn’t that sound delicious?

It was an Olive twig that the dove brought back to Noah in the ark which revealed
the receding of the flood water and gave hope of dry ground and a new life.  The
Olive, originally found in S W Asia, became an important crop – its oil used in cooking, lighting and anointing. It symbolises abundance, glory and peace.  The Olive is a
long-lived tree and it will regenerate from a damaged tree if its roots are good.
The Garden of Gethsemane is part way up the Mount of Olives and its name
Geth-shemna means oil-press.  Some of the trees in the garden are said to be nearly
2 000 years old.  They, or their parent plants may have been there in the time of
Jesus.

If you want to see some huge Olive trees and you don’t feel that you are able to
travel to Israel, visit “The Olive Tree”  just outside Oundle – they do great food and
the trees will really impress you !

Stay safe and well. My love to you all, Ann

Prayers

We pray for the peace of the world, that all people may live in harmony, celebrating their differences and respecting others’ beliefs and way of life.  Grant to the world’s leaders wisdom, and compassion for those who suffer.  May love prevail the world over.  We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen

We pray for our church, for our local community, and for our families and friends.  We pray for travellers and for those away on holiday, that they may return refreshed and enriched by their experiences.  We remember those who for reasons of poverty, fear or ill-health are unable to go away on holiday.

Amen

We pray for all who suffer in mind or body and for those who care for them. We pray for the sick; for those who mourn, for those without faith, hope or love.  We pray for any known to us who are in special need of our prayers at this time.

Amen

Collect

Lord of all power and might,
the author and giver of all good things:
graft in our hearts the love of your name,
increase in us true religion,
nourish us with all goodness,
and of your great mercy keep us in the same;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First Reading

Romans 8.26-39

26The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

28We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

31What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written,
‘For your sake we are being killed all day long;
we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, 39nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel

Matthew 13.31-33,44-52

31Jesus put before the crowd another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; 32it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’ 33He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.

44The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ 52And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

Lord God, whose Son is the true vine and the source of life,
ever giving himself that the world may live:
may we so receive within ourselves
the power of his death and passion
that, in his saving cup,
we may share his glory and be made perfect in his love;
for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen

Hymn for today

1) Take my life, and let it be

consecrated, Lord, to thee.

Take my moments and my days,

let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2) Take my voice, and let me sing

always, only, for my King.

Take my lips, and let them be

fill’d with messages from thee.

Yvonne is now being cared for at home but is requiring round the clock care. If you would like to offer some practical support, we are looking for people who would be willing to cook a meal for two on a rota basis. Lucy Lorentzen our Safeguarding Officer (details below) is coordinating this, if you feel you could help with a meal please get in touch with Lucy. We are hoping to start the rota from Monday 27th July. Thank you

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
