Sunday 21st June 2020

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 21st June 2020

The Second Sunday after Trinity

Happy Father’s day to you all.

As lockdown began on Mother’s day, I guess it’s only fair that Fathers have to experience it the same way too. On Mother’s day, lockdown had only just begun, Yvonne very kindly offered to record her sermon and we had no idea that Jez and I would enter the world of Hollywood movie making. Emma had fortunately made the last-minute decision to not get 300 daffodils or she would have had a very flowery living room. I think, few of us would have thought that three months on, we would still be in lockdown.

And yet, there are signs of new life. Not only is Rushden Lakes reopened, but four of us met in church for the first time, last week, to plan how to reopen it for private prayer. It’s a long way off from ‘normal’ but it’s something. For the time being, on Monday and Friday the church will be open for a short time to re-enter a very special place for all of us.

But I know that for some, especially those shielding, this is more painful, knowing that you can re-enter the church but shouldn’t. Much like the image of a group coming down the mountain, some will be able to risk running down it, whilst others will need to take their time. I encourage you to keep going at your own pace. We’re not at the bottom yet and we won’t leave anyone behind, so if you need a hand or a bit of encouragement, we are there for you, don’t hesitate to ring. I pray you have a very happy father’s day, however you choose to mark it in lockdown.

God bless Tom

Prayers

Jesus, you call each of us by name, you know the number of hairs on our head,
you send us out to work alongside one another. We pray for all those who come alongside and support those struggling with illness, hurt or mental health issues.  Where we can’t be physically present, may you be strongly present spiritually as you
come alongside them. We ask this in Jesus name.

Amen.

God, bless all the fathers in the world. Guide them to be good role models and loving to all their children. Help them to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way.
Amen

Dear Lord, we thank you that you say to us each, ‘my child your sins are forgiven, go in peace and sin no more’. We thank you that you give us your Spirit to help us know you and be closer to you. We thank you that when we come to you, you don’t wait for us to be clever enough, good enough, or perfect enough – but you accept us as we are in complete Love. We thank you for people who have shown us what your love is like, remembering with thanks those who have died who have shown us what your love is like. We bring our prayers to You in Jesus name.

Amen

Collect

Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First ReadingRomans 6.1b-11

1Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. 8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Thanks be to God

GospelMatthew 10.26b-39

Nothing is secret that will not become known. 27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

32Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.

34Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35For I have come to set a man against his father,
and a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household.

37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.’

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

Loving Father,
we thank you for feeding us at the supper of your Son:
sustain us with your Spirit,
that we may serve you here on earth
until our joy is complete in heaven,
and we share in the eternal banquet
with Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Hymn for today

(1) As the deer pants for the water,

so my soul longs after you.

You alone are my heart’s desire

and I long to worship you.

You alone are my strength, my shield,

to you alone may my spirit yield.

You alone are my heart’s desire

and I long to worship you.

(3) You’re my friend and you are my brother,

even though you are a king.

I love you more than any other,

so much more than anything.

You alone are my strength, my shield,

to you alone may my spirit yield.

You alone are my heart’s desire

and I long to worship you

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
