The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 16th August 2020

The Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Dear Friends

In a conversation with a fellow Christian recently he mentioned that he had received unexpected calls from his children on 31st July, and I told him that I also received two from my children on the same day.  My friend confessed that it was the anniversary of his wife, and their mothers’ death on that day but he had forgotten the actual date.  My own connection with the last day of July is it was that it was our wedding anniversary.

In order to recall significant events and celebrations, humans have often kept particular days and also in faith communities – especially to maintain persistence in prayer, as we have prayed for today – in the Church we have kept major festivals such as Christmas and Easter as well as special saints days associated with the dedication of our church names.  Although church history is often challenging and frequently controversial, there are many excellent headlines and examples from the saints of their lives and ministries.  For Mary they have often have taken place in such places as Burton and Rushden on 8th September, her birthday. In the latter town  there  has usually also been a circus  as it’s also usually kept as a secular festival.

More recently, after the publication of Common Worship, the major feast day of Mary was moved to 15th August and transferred sometimes from the dedication of the nearest Sunday  – perhaps in agreement with the Roman Catholics and the majority of Christians as the day kept across the world.

Whatever our choice let’s keep anniversaries – and also special places to visit and pray in as a reminder, an encouragement and a stimulation for continuing our faith journeys .

Blessings,Roger

Prayers

Lord of heaven and earth, as Jesus taught his disciples to be persistent in prayer,

give us patience and courage never to lose hope, but always to bring our prayers before you

Heavenly Father, we hold before you the people of Beirut at this time.  In your mercy, bring comfort to those who mourn, healing to those who are injured, shelter to those who are homeless and sustenance to those who hunger. Give strength to those who are working to rebuild shattered lives, and protect those who are vulnerable especially in this time of coronavirus.  Lead us in your ways so that together we may bring the light of new hope wherever there is destruction and despair.   We also pray for those involved in the airplane crash in India, for the injured, those who have died and those who mourn their loss.

Lord God, whose Son, Jesus Christ, understood people’s fear and pain before they spoke of them, we pray for those in hospital; surround the frightened with your tenderness; give strength to those in pain; hold the weak in your arms of love, and give hope and patience to those who are recovering. We remember those who have died and ask you to be with their families and friends as they grieve for their loved ones, and we pray for those whose anniversaries are at this time

We ask these things in the name of your Son, our saviour, Jesus Christ, our Lord

Amen.

Our Prayer List

In company with the other churches in the town, each week we pray for a different street: this week is Croxon Close

Mick French, Jackie Kings, Sebastian, Yvonne Desroches, Jean Thompson;
Jim Fraser

We pray for the souls of those who have died

Louise Dove, David Revett, Michael Guest

We remember those whose anniversaries of death are at this time:

Eric Leeson, Manrion Palmer

Collect

Let your merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of your humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions
make them to ask such things as shall please you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First Reading

Romans 11.1-2a,29-32

1I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, 31so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. 32For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all.

Gospel

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to N.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Matthew 15.10-20

10Then Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, ‘Listen and understand: 11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.’ 12Then the disciples approached and said to him, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees took offence when they heard what you said?’ 13He answered, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.’ 15But Peter said to him, ‘Explain this parable to us.’ 16Then he said, ‘Are you also still without understanding? 17Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? 18But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. 19For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. 20These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer After Communion

God of our pilgrimage,
you have willed that the gate of mercy
should stand open for those who trust in you:
look upon us with your favour
that we who follow the path of your will
may never wander from the way of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hymn

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound,

that saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost, but now I’m found,

was blind, but now I see.

Through many dangers, toils and snares

I have already come.

‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far,

and Grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there a thousand years,

bright shining as the sun,

we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

than when we first begun.

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

Prayer after Communion

Post communion prayer available on your sheet

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
