Sunday 13th September 2020

The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Burton Latimer

Making the love of God known in our community & homes

Week commencing 13th September 2020

The Fourteenth Sunday After Trinity

Dear Friends

The rule of six. It sounds like the title of a Hollywood blockbuster, not a reminder that we still aren’t out of the woods yet with Covid.  But I’m sure you will be glad to know, that this new law does not affect our church services and we are still able to safely host 30 households (maximum of 50 people) per service. We will meet again this Sunday in person and online and it looks like this ‘mixed mode’ of worship could be life for the next few months at least.

Sadly, I need to inform you that this is the last preamble on our notice sheet for the foreseeable future, but I hope you have enjoyed the staff team’s ramblings these past six months. I know for me it has been a source of encouragement to read a short personal message from those who normally I would have seen a few times at least in a week.

Finally, we have taken the difficult decision not to receive donations for the food bank this harvest.  Instead we are asking that those wishing to give, to do so directly to the nearest foodbank drop of place (for most that will be Sainsbury’s). However, we are having a special harvest themed service next week with Jez  and the debut single of our St Mary’s choir. So please do join us next week in celebrating all the good gifts God has blessed us with.

Every blessing

Tom

Prayers

Heavenly Father, be with all those who have, or are soon to, returned to school.  We pray for teachers, pupils and all other staff members, for their health and safety in classrooms and schools have been modified to allow for proper social distancing and hygiene,  We ask you protect the families of all students and teachers as they return home each day and ask that the spread of the virus will slow down so that it will not affect these families.  We ask these things in Jesus’ name

Amen

Lord, teach us to be generous as you have been generous with us. Show us the truth of the saying: ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive’ . Help us to understand that others, perhaps unknown to us, depend on us for help.  Remind us that our world and our parish, need “Good Samaritans” to heal the wounds of our community. In these times of economic hardship, we pray for the food banks – may they be perpetually replenished like the loaves and fishes.  Lord, make us a gift to others in your name.
Amen

Lord, we thank you that you forgive us our sins and ask you to help us to forgive those who have wronged us.  We ask your forgiveness for all our transgressions and for the forgiveness of those whom we have offended or upset.  Quiet our understandings and give ease to our hearts by bringing us close to things infinite and eternal.  Open to us the mind of God so that through his light we may see light. And crown your choice of us to be your servants by making us springs of strength and joy to all whom we serve.

Amen

Collect

Almighty God,
whose only Son has opened for us
a new and living way into your presence:
give us pure hearts and steadfast wills
to worship you in spirit and in truth;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Amen

First Reading

Romans 14.1-12

1Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarrelling over opinions. 2Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. 3Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgement on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. 4Who are you to pass judgement on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

5Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. 6Those who observe the day, observe it in honour of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honour of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honour of the Lord and give thanks to God.

7We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. 8If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10Why do you pass judgement on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgement seat of God. 11For it is written,
‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
and every tongue shall give praise to God.’
12So then, each of us will be accountable to God.

Gospel

Matthew 18.21-35

21Peter came and said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?’ 22Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

23For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; 25and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.” 27And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, “Pay what you owe.” 29Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, “Have patience with me, and I will pay you.” 30But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32Then his lord summoned him and said to him, “You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy on you?” 34And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.’

Praise to you, O Christ

Prayer after Communion

Lord God, the source of truth and love,
keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
united in prayer and the breaking of bread,
and one in joy and simplicity of heart,
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hymn

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound,

that saved a wretch like me.

I once was lost, but now Im found,

was blind, but now I see.

Through many dangers, toils and snares

I have already come.

Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far,

and Grace will lead me home.

When weve been there a thousand years,

bright shining as the sun,

weve no less days to sing Gods praise

than when we first begun.

Next week we shall be celebrating Harvest Sunday (as per Tom’s preamble). Items currently needed by the foodbank are: Long life juice or squash, tinned fruit, meat or fish, rice pudding, custard, pasta sauce, instant mash, tinned potatoes, coffee, snacks or crisps, choc biscuits, etc.

Lighting of the candle(s)

Almighty God,

to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known,

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name;

through Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Reflection

Invitation to Confession

The minister

You then, who truly and earnestly repent of your sins,

and are in love and charity with your neighbours,

and intend to lead a new life,

following the commandments of God,

and walking from this day forward in his holy ways:

draw near with faith,

and take this holy sacrament to your comfort;

and make your humble confession to almighty God.

Confession

All  Father eternal, giver of light and grace,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour,

in what we have thought,

in what we have said and done,

through ignorance, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We have wounded your love,

and marred your image in us.

We are sorry and ashamed,

and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and lead us out from darkness

to walk as children of light.

Amen

Absolution

The minister says

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

who in his great mercy

has promised forgiveness of sins

to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him:

have mercy on you,

pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

and bring you to everlasting life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All   Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Eucharist Prayer

Have your bread a wine ready

The Lord be with you

All  and also with you.

Father, on the night before he died,

Jesus shared a meal with his friends.

He took the bread, and thanked you.

He broke it, and gave it to them, saying:

Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.

Do this to remember me.

After the meal, Jesus took the cup of wine.

He thanked you, and gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you.

This is my blood,

the new promise of God’s unfailing love.

Do this to remember me.

Jesus Christ has died.

All  Jesus Christ has died.

Jesus Christ is risen.

All  Jesus Christ is risen.

Jesus Christ will come again.

All  Jesus Christ will come again.

Father, as we bring this bread and wine,

and remember his death and resurrection,

send your Holy Spirit,

that we who share these gifts, though apart but together now in you,

may be fed by Christ’s body and his blood.

Pour your Spirit on us

that we may love one another,

work for the healing of the earth,

and share the good news of Jesus,

as we wait for his coming in glory.

For honour and praise belong to you, Father,

with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit:

one God, for ever and ever.

All Amen

We take communion.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All   Our Father, who art in heaven,

      hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;

thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Blessing

The peace of God,

which passes all understanding,

keep your hearts and minds

in the knowledge and love of God,

and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always.

All   Amen.
