When the church was restored in the 1860s the bells were lowered and thus could not be rung from the first floor of the belfry. In 2000 this was reversed so that a room could be made to house a crèche. The money for this was given by the Harpur family as a memorial to life and work of Janet Harpur and is named after her. In the south west corner there is a piece of sculpture which, from its position leaves little doubt that it marks the original Early English doorway to the tower stairway.
